Toussaint Giroux spent his entire life in the settlement of Beauport, a place his parents had lived since its early days. He was born there on March 1, 1672, the second youngest in a family of twelve children.1 He was named for his father, Toussaint Giroux; two brothers of that name had previously died as small infants.
Toussaint’s mother was Marie Godard, who had first appeared in records as the child servant of founder of Beauport Robert Giffard;4 her origins in France are unknown, and there is some speculation that she may have been a Huron Indian, but this isn’t proven. It’s interesting, though, that Toussaint’s older brother and sister were married in a double wedding to a sister and brother who were Métis.5,6 The wedding took place in Beauport on August 18, 1683, and 11-year-old Toussaint was likely in attendance. Sadly, the following year, his mother Marie died.7 His father remarried and gave Toussaint one half-sister born in 1688.8
Toussaint was 18-years-old when New England tried to invade Quebec in 1690. That summer, a fleet of about 32 ships sailed from New England with the intent of taking over the French colony. On October 18th, 1,200 soldiers landed near Beauport and made camp to stage their main attack on Quebec City. It was thought that the easiest way to breach Quebec’s fortifications was from the St. Charles River side, which was very close to where Toussaint’s family lived. The effort was unsuccessful for the English, and after several days of fighting the French forces, they ran out of ammunition and were forced to retreat.
Less than a month later, Toussaint got married to a 16-year-old girl from Beauport, Therese Dauphin; her sister had already married Toussaint’s brother Jean. The wedding was in Beauport on November 15, 1690,2 and in attendance were Toussaint and Therese’s fathers along with his brother Raphael and brother-in-law Jean-Baptiste Prevost. Therese’s father Etienne gave them a house in St-Michel, which was a section of Beauport. On December 1, 1692, Toussaint received another grant of land nearby from Sieur Joseph Giffard.9

Between 1693 and 1715, Toussaint was the father of fifteen children. Four of the children died as infants, and a fifth died at age 13, but the others produced a large number of descendants. Toussaint’s wife Therese passed away on May 18, 1732,10 and he survived her by many years, dying on February 24, 1750 in Beauport,3 the same community where he had been born.
