Pierre Sauvé spent his life where early St. Lawrence River settlers looked toward the frontier. He was born in the seigneury of Lachine, on May 7, 1700 to Pierre Sauvé dit LaPlante and Marie-Renée Michel, the third of twelve children.1 His father had been a soldier sent over from France in the 1680s,4 and his mother was a survivor of the 1689 massacre at Lachine,5 an event that took the lives of his grandparents and uncle.
By 1704, Pierre’s family moved to an outpost at the west end of Montreal Island where his father had acquired land in 1698.6 It was a place frequently under threat of attack from the Iroquois, but after a 1701 treaty brought peace to the region, settlers moved in. The tiny settlement was initially named Ste-Anne-du-Bout-de-l'Île, and was renamed Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue in 1711. The geography was strategic to the fur trade because rapids prevented river navigation to Montreal, and this was where canoes would unload their pelts brought in from the Great Lakes area. It’s likely that Pierre was surrounded by fur trading activity in his youth, but it’s uncertain if he ever engaged in it.

Pierre was 26-years-old when he got married. His bride was Louise Ranger dite Laviolette, the daughter of another settler, and their wedding took place on October 21, 1726 in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue’s little wooden chapel.2 The couple’s first child was born the following year, and they had another nine by January of 1750.
Little else is known of the life of Pierre. His wife Louise passed away on October 1, 1751 at Montreal.7 A court record dated July 4, 1761 showed that his underaged children were assigned a legal guardian.3 This was followed by a record indicating the inventory of Pierre's estate had been completed by August 21st, so his death happened before both dates. All of his children survived to adulthood and married, most of them remaining not far from where they were born.
