On the South Shore of Île d’Orleans — Jean Baillargeon

B. 5 Sep 1659 in (probably) Île d’Orleans, New France1
M. 2 Mar 1683 in St-Laurent, Île d’Orleans, New France2
Wife: Marie-Jeanne Godbout
D. 1 Apr 1694 in St-Laurent, Île d’Orleans, New France3

Jean Baillargeon seems to have spent his entire short life in or near St-Laurent on the Île d’Orleans. His parents Jean Baillargeon and Marguerite Guillebourdeau lived there at the time he was born on September 5, 1659.1 Since there was no place to baptize him nearby, at two-weeks old, Jean was taken by boat to Notre-Dame church in Quebec City. Also in the family were an older brother and sister; there were no more children born to his parents, and his mother died when he was 2-years-old.4

Jean's baptism record in the Notre-Dame-de-Quebec parish register.

Life during Jean’s childhood was challenging at times, and in 1661, the area where they lived faced the threat of Iroquois raids, causing the family to seek refuge elsewhere.5 After that date, the danger was somewhat diminished, and Jean grew up on his family's farm. Jean’s father remarried in 1666,6 but his new step-mother was deceased within a year.5

In early 1683, Jean got engaged to Marie-Jeanne Godbout; their marriage banns were announced in the church on February 7th, 21st and 24th, as was required for their union to be valid. The wedding took place on March 2nd, with Jean’s brother in attendance;2 neither his father nor Marie-Jeanne’s parents were still alive. The following year, a son was born, and by July of 1693, Jean had three more children.

Unfortunately, Jean didn’t live to a ripe old age; he died on April 1, 1694 at St-Laurent.3 He was buried three days later in his church’s graveyard. Wife Marie-Jeanne remarried nine years later, and died in 1732.7
