Michel Mignault dit LaBrie was a hard-working peasant who seems to have died suddenly in the prime of his life. He was born on April 29, 1697 into the large family of Jean Mignault dit LaBrie and Marie-Sainte Boucher.1 They lived in Rivière-Ouelle, New France, a place on the south shore of the St. Lawrence. When Michel was 20-years-old, his mother died;5 his father remarried 9 years later,6 giving him two-half sisters.
By this time, Michel had also gotten married. His bride was Ursule Soucy, the daughter of a settler of the nearby town of La-Pocatière, where their wedding took place on October 26, 1724.2 The newlyweds eventually settled in La Pocatière, and between 1727 and 1748, Michel became a father twelve times, with three of the children dying young.

The youngest of the children was still small when their mother Ursule died on March 30, 1754,7 leaving Michel with a large family to raise. This is likely why on November 24th of the following year, he married a widow named Angélique-Rosalie Morin,3 who had several children of her own. Angélique’s first husband was the brother of Michel’s step-mother,8 so there may have been family influence involved with the match.
Michel’s second marriage was very brief because he died that winter.4 No burial record survives, so his date of death is unknown, but he was only in his 50s, and it left a messy estate to sort out. The authorities needed to assign a guardian for the underaged children, and Michel’s brother Jean-Baptiste was chosen. Soon after, all of Michel’s possessions were inventoried, sold, and the money divided among his children, with all but his oldest daughter getting a share of about 85 livres.4 The process took several years, and by the end of it, oldest son Joseph seemed to take over the role of guardian.4
Michel’s widow Angélique remarried within a month or two of his death,9 and wasn’t mentioned in the probate record. All except the youngest child eventually married, giving him many descendants.
