Edge Tool Maker in Montreal — Guillaume Maillot

B. 31 Dec 1680 in Grondines, New France
M. 16 Jan 1704 in Montreal, New France
Wife: Marie-Anne Masse
D. 20 Apr 1718 in Montreal, New France

Guillaume Maillot had a short life as metal-worker in early 18th century Montreal. He was born in Grondines on December 31, 1680 to René Maillot and Marie Chapacou, the fifth of their eleven children. His father had been a Carignan-Saliéres Regiment who came to New France in 1665, then married and started a family. Grondines is located between Quebec City and Trois-Rivières, and it isn’t known when Guillaume left his family and moved on his own to Montreal. No one else in his family seemed to have lived there.

At age 23, Guillaume married Marie-Anne Masse, a young woman from Montreal. The wedding took place at Notre-Dame church and was attended by Marie-Anne’s mother and a man named Gilles Luton, a former Carignan-Saliéres soldier; it isn’t known if the man knew Guillaume’s father, but they didn’t serve in the same company. The marriage record also showed that both the groom and bride were able to sign their own names. Between 1705 and 1717, Guillaume and Marie-Anne had nine children, but sadly only two daughters seemed to have lived past infancy.

Guillaume’s father-in-law was a master edge tool maker, and it seems likely that the two men had a working relationship; maybe Guillaume worked for the older man before or after he married his daughter. At some point, Guillaume likely set up his own shop in Montreal making plows, spades, axes, and other metal items needed by settlers. He also probably repaired their tools.

Guillaume’s married life lasted only about 14 years. He died in Montreal on April 20, 1718 at the age of 37. Six months later, his widow Marie-Anne remarried, but she died in September of 1721, also at the age of 37.
